Magic start with four out of four podiums for Jon

Farnsfield driver Jon Mortimer has made a storming start to the new racing season with four podiums in four races to go top of the Avon Tyres Caterham Supersport Championship, four points clear of second placed driver Steve Day and seven points ahead of third placed Adam White.

Over the winter Jon has changed teams and is now in partnership with DPR Motorsport.

The opening round saw Mortimer in his Chapelle Jewellery-sponsored Caterham at a cold and windy Snetterton, where he managed pole position for race one by 0.4secs.

Mike Hart took an early lead into turn one, but by the time they came across the line again at the end of the first lap, Mortimer had retaken the lead.

An incident on lap one saw safety car conditions and another incident saw the ace red-flagged.

After a shortened re-start of 20 minutes, some fast and furious racing from Mortimer saw him take the chequered flag in third position, 0.5secs behind the winner, and a podium for his first race of the season.

Race two saw Mortimer on the grid on row two and produce some fantastic racing with a group of five or six cars changing position throughout the lap.

By mid race Mortimer had broken away from the rest of the pack with two others.

Another safety car session after an incident at Montreal saw the race result declared under safety car which gave third place and a second podium of the opening weekend for Mortimer, leaving him third in the Championship, just three points behind leader Adam White.

Mortimer’s local circuit Donington Park hosted the second two races where he was hoping to follow his success there last season where he took third and second positions before ending fourth overall in the Championship at the end of 2013.

At a wet and windy Donington Park, wet and ever-changing track conditions left him down in third position.

As a result of the number of entries for the Supersports Championship (41 for this round) a split grid format was introduced as per MSA guidelines. This meant that Mortimer would have both his races on Sunday.

A wet track for race one greeted the drivers on Sunday morning, but with strong winds, blue skies, and the sun out Mortimer and his DPR Motorsport team opted for a ‘dry’ set up on the car with the expectation that the track would dry out during the 30 minute race.

He held second position into Redgate Corner, but then on lap two was overtaken down into Craner Curves, leaving him in third.

Late braking into Fogarty Esses on lap two saw Mortimer retake second position and he then set about trying to catch race leader Day.

On lap three the rain came down and, by lap five, the safety car had been deployed after contact further down the field

It went in on lap eight and Mortimer struggled with traction and went into fourth position after being overtaken by Mike Hart and Lee Furness, but soon got back into second.

Mortimer battled with a wet track and treacherous conditions and in the last five minutes of the race was in fifth position, but late braking into Redgate corner on the penultimate lap saw him retake fourth place and again on the last lap another late brake saw him into third position for another podium, and an extra Championship point for the fastest lap of the race with 1:51.703 and a top speed of 80.16mph.

A delayed start due to poor weather saw an early evening race two. As a result of the split grid format Mortimer started on pole position and got a good start off the line, despite the terrible weather conditions.

After lap one he had a lead of over 0.9seconds and by lap three he was being chased by a pack of four cars.

But Mortimer kept his cool in the slippery and damp conditions and a three way battle began with Hart and ex-Caterham EuroCup racer Danny Killeen.

By lap 13 the trio had pulled a gap of over six seconds to fourth place and Mortimer sat on the tails of Hart and Killeen, biding his time for an opportunity to overtake in the closing stages of the race.

Starting the final lap Mortimer was looking strong and, as all three cars came into Craner Curves for the last time, Hart tried to pass Killeen on the inside at Old Hairpin Hart, ran wide and, on exit, both Hart and Killeen ran wide which gave Mortimer the race lead.

By McLean’s, Mortimer had time to pass the back markers and cross the finish line 2.2secs ahead for his fourth podium and first race win of the Avon Tyres Caterham Supersport Championship season.

Next round is on 7th/8th June and sees Mortimer travelling to Belgium for a visit to the former Belgian Grand Prix Circuit of Zolder.
