BOWLS: Rolls avoid the drop

A VITAL victory against Carlton ensured that relegation-threatened ROLLS-ROYCE LEISURE will stay in Division One of the Notts Midweek 3X3 Federation for next season.

Rolls made sure by sweeping to a 6-0 whitewash win (71 shots to 40), which included a runaway success of 30-14 for Ann Taylor, Geoff Gunn and Alan Parker, who scored a seven, a six and two fours.

John Etches, Alan Harvey and Bert Wright won 24-14, while Maureen Gunn, Mark Foulds and Stuart Newton triumphed 17-12.

IN STARK contrast, a depleted Rolls side were on the receiving end of a whitewash when thrashed 7-0 (134 shots to 84) by Investment in Division One of the Notts Saturday 31-Ends Federation.

The only rink to put up a serious fight was that of Grenville Foulds, Carol Briggs and Graham Fowler, who were level at 21-21 after 19 ends, only to fall 29-26.

Pauline Harvey, Albert Briggs and Alan Harvey lost 34-21, despite leading 16-11 at one stage, while Lily Bennington, Keith Powell and Ron Clurow lost 33-24.

The other rink was a player short, leading to an inevitable 38-13 hammering for Ann Taylor and Stuart Newton.

IT couldn’t have been closer when Rolls clashed with Wilford in the First Division of the Notts Mixed EBA League.

For just one shot separated the sides as the locals edged home 75-74 (four points to three), even though they lost three of the four rinks.

Lily Bennington, John Etches and Alan Parker went down 22-15, Pauline Harvey, Ron Clurow anx Alan Harvey 16-12 and Ann Taylor, Graham Fowler and Stuart Newton 19-13.

But the Rolls heroes were Maureen Gunn, Geoff Gunn and Bert Wright, who picked up a five and five fours, including a crucial one on the last end, to secure a 35-17 win.
