Brooks fits the Bill in tight Rolls win

TWO goals and a man-of-the-match performance by Billy Brooks earned HUCKNALL ROLLS LEISURE a narrow 3-2 win at Selston in the Notts Senior League’s Senior Division.

The progress of young midfielder Brooks has stalled since he made a big impact when first arriving on the Rolls scene at the start of last season.

But in an unfamiliar role wide on the right, he was back to his best to help Rolls to a victory they just about deserved, considering they were missing both centre-backs, Johnny Buckley and Aaron Short.

All five goals came in the opening 37 minutes, with Selston twice taking the lead through Steve Smith — first courtesy of a 20-yarder into the corner after confusion in the Rolls rearguard and then from a lovely chip after he had nutmegged full-back Charlie Niblett.

Brooks netted the two equalisers, nodding home unmarked at the far post after an Andy Start cross and bursting into the box to finish expertly after a terrific ball from Ian Paterson.

Recalled striker Start bagged what proved to be the winner, slotting comfortably into the corner from a through ball by Niblett.

Rolls missed three sitters in the first 15 minutes of the second half — the culprits being Start and Kyle McDermott. But Selston rarely threatened to save the game.

ROLLS LINE-UP (4-4-2) — Rollson/ Niblett, Tolley, Paterson D., Osbourne/ Brooks, Murray, Paterson I., Wallis/ Start A., McDermott. Subs: Gamble (for McDermott 75), Thomas (for Murray 80).
