Callum Denby-Whitt (16) won Sutton Harriers’ Portland Cup as 40 club members turned out for the final handicap of the season – a 5.8-mile route from Teversal Visitors’ Centre along part of the old Silverhill Colliery site and Teversal/Pleasley trails.

The men competed for the oldest trophy held by the club, donated to the club in 1910 by the late Duke of Portland and was fought out by two of the younger members of the club.

Callum Ball (15) and Denby-Whitt battled hard with Callum Denby-Whitt proving to be the stronger of the two, winning by 23 seconds with James Simpson taking third place 15 seconds behind Callum Ball.

Richard Robinson, running from scratch position, broke the course record with a time of 33-48.

The ladies competed for the Draycott Cup, which was donated by an ex-member of the club Barry Draycott, and it proved to be a lot closer race with only 14 seconds being between the first four finishers.

The race was won by newcomer Kerry Shooter in a handicap time of 36-16, closely followed in second place by Sarah Allcock 36-24 and Chloe Paylor in third in 36-29.

On a warm and sunny Sunday, 14,000 runners took part in the 2014 Robin Hood Marathon and Half Marathon including seven members of Sutton Harriers.

In the Half Marathon, first home was Laetita Moakes with a personal best of 1hr 34min 34secs, followed by Alan Dickens in 1hr 39min 56secs.

Next, after starting training at Sutton Harriers in the summer, Kerry Shooter completed the race in 1hr 52min 47secs - a personal best.

Competing as a training run for his New York Marathon in November, David Thompson also finished in a personal best of 1hr 56min 13secs.

In the full marathon, Gary Berzins finished in a great time of 3hrs 07min 18secs, yet another personal best.

He was followed in by James Simpson (4hrs 07mins 07secs) and Paul Beasley (4hrs 22mins 01secs). Donna Atkinson was running well until mile 21, when she stopped with a pulled muscle, but, wanting to finish the race, she continued walking and completed it in 5hrs 40mins.
