Head coach Ian Melvin was far from downhearted, even though HUCKNALL FALCION finished last of six in the first round of the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Junior League last Saturday night.

For many of the Falcon youngsters, aged nine to 12, the event, held at Bramcote Leisure Centre, was their first competitive gala. So Melvin was delighted with a host of personal-best (PB) times and four second-place finishes, achieved by Dylan Walker and Emily Butler.

Walker was runner-up in the nine-and-under boys’ 25m freestyle and 25m butterfly, while junior girls’ captain Butler emulated him in the 11-and-under girls’ 50m butterfly and 50m freestyle.

Commented Melvin: “It was absolutely fantastic to see our younger generation of swimmers competing and gaining the rewards for their efforts.

“It was also amazing to record a total of just under 50 PBs from some good swims and good efforts.

“The team result was not the important part of the event. The gala was all about giving opportunity to those in development and watching their performance and involvement.

“It was nice to see that the youngsters grasped it with both hands. Well done to the Falcon juniors, and thankyou to all the coaches and poolside supporters for their help.”

The catalogue of Fakcon swimmers who clocked PBs reads: Tyler-Jay Pritchett (4, backstroke, butterfly, freestyle), junior boys’ captain Benjamin Davies (2, breaststroke), Eve Tuckwood (3, backstroke, freestyle).

Grace Allsop (4, butterfly, freestyle), Dylan Walker (3, freestyle, butterfly), Matthew Burke (3, freestyle, butterfly), Keira Webb (freestyle), Dylan Hopkinson (2, freestyle, butterfly), Katrine Wilson (3, freestyle, breaststroke).

Abigail Davies (3, freestyle, breaststroke), Jacob Webster (2, backstroke), Bradley Gregory (freestyle), Evie Allsop (4, breaststroke, butterfly, freestyle), Tilly Gunn (3), butterfly, backstroke).

Emily Butler (2, breaststroke), Sophie Stevenson (2, breaststroke, freestyle), Hettie Chambers (backstroke), Dylan Hutchinson (2, backstroke, breaststroke) and Rebecca Fitch (frreestyle),

The next round of the Derbyshire and Notts League is in May. The league is one of 11 across the country that are part of the Arena Junior Inter-League, which is affiliated to the Amateur Swimming Association.
