CRICKET: Below-par batting to blame for Newstead

A BELOW-par performance with the bat saw Newstead Abbey fall 71 runs short of their victory target against Gedling Colliery 2nd in Division C of the Gunn And Moore South Notts League.

Dan Greenhalgh kept up his end of the bargain with the ball, taking five wickets for 73 runs from 16 overs.

Nick Rose also came up with a wicket and two late run-outs.

But despite this, the high-riding locals still faced a target in excess of 200 after an impressive half-century from opener Geoff Curtis (58, six fours) and 37 (six fours) from Geoff Moore

In reply, Newstead opener Gary Devonshire played well for 44.

But the rest of the top-order batsmen failed to make a telling contribution as wickets fell far too regularly to Zaheer Rahman (four for 21 from six overs), Ryan Easom (two for seven from four) and Gareth Hayes (two for 35 from ten).
