CRICKET: Deja vu for thrashed Newstead

FOR the second season running, Newstead Abbey were bowled out for just 100 on a visit to Gedling Colliery 2nd in Division C of the Gunn And Moore South Notts League.

And not surprisingly, for the second season running they slumped to defeat — this time presenting the struggling hosts with their first win of the new campaign.

Batting first, Newstead had little answer to miserly bowling from spinner Zaheer Rehman (four for 18), the experienced Baz Bailey (three for 22) and Gedling skipper Gareth Hayes, who chipped in with two for 40.

The only locals’ batsmen to find any kind of form were Nick Rose, who made 30, and Adam Kalka, who added 20 as the final wicket tumbled in the 36th over.

Twelve months earlier, Gedling had almost made a hash of their reply. But not this time — despite a couple of wickets for leading Newstead bowler Nick Hand (two for 29).

Knocks of 30 from Graham Burton and 26 not out from Geoff Curtis ensured that the home side eased to their target by the 29th over.

Newstead now aim to get their season back on track when they visit Risley tomorrow (Saturday).
