Debut delight for club’s new star

WINNING DEBUT -- Mark Underwood

Hucknall boxing club, St George, could have unearthed a new star in welterweight Mark Underwood.

For the 23-year-old Underwood, who started boxing only six months ago, launched his career with a fine win on his debut at Derby.

He caught opponent Ross Tilley, of the Swadlincote-based Royal Oak club, with a strong right hook in the second round to end the fight.

Now Underwood, who lives in Ravenshead, is looking forward to his next bout at Immingham, Lincolnshire, on Friday March 15.

His success delighted St George’s new head coach, Clinton McPhilbin, who is working hard to rebuild the club.

McPhilbin now has eight boxers on his register, including 21-year-old Jordan Bradley, who made his comeback last Sunday after a five-year break.

Bradley, from Calverton, lost a close bout against Henry Rooney, of Mansfield ABC but showed a lot of heart and grit and earned a re-match, which is to take place next Friday at Huthwaite.

On the same Mansfield bill, ten-year-old Corey McPhilbin, who was featured in last week’s Dispatch Sport, boxed brilliantly on his debut in a skills fight, with no winner, against Nelson Rush, of Retford.
