Ex-cage fighter starts strong as pro boxer

FORMER cage-fighter Ricky Gammon, of Hucknall, continued the excellent start to his new career as a professional boxer.

Middleweight Gammon (26) marked his pro debut in June with victory over Guildford fighter Louis Byrne. And he followed up by defeating the more experienced Ryan Clark, of Lincolnshire, in a bout at the Grove Leisure Centre in Newark.

Gammon tested his opponent early on with some strong body-shots and soon began to target the 22-year-old Clark’s chin.

Clark refused to go down without a battle but Gammon proved too powerful and skilful from his southpaw stance, winning each of the four rounds and getting the referee’s verdict on points, 40-36.

Gammon trains out of the Peak Physique gym at Kirkby but also uses as training bases the renowned St George Amateur Boxing Club on Peveril Street in Hucknall and JR’s Olympia on Watnall Road, Hucknall.

He occasionally spars with Bulwell professional fighter, Midland cruiserweight champion Shane ‘Mr Block’ McPhilbin.
