One of Hucknall’s top sportswomen is rounding off an amazing year by getting into the Christmas spirit early.
Gymnast Becky Downie (22) is now so well known and appreciated across the country that she is in big demand from companies wanting to promote products and spread marketing messages.
And one such engagement this week has been a visit to the Royal Mail sorting offices in Nottinghamshire to help remind everyone of the last dates they can post their Christmas cards and parcels.
“Post early for Christmas!” was the slogan Becky brandished in photos splashed across Twitter. In response, Royal Mail News tweeted: “Thanks so much for visiting us and spreading the message.”
Becky, whose family home is off Nottingham Road, Hucknall, did a similar job for Gymnastic Express, who manufacture and distribute high-quality products for serious gymnasts. She was pictured on Twitter signing some of the firm’s Christmas goodies, ready for Santa to deliver!
Becky’s reputation has soared sky-high this year after fighting back from the bitter disappointment of missing out on the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Individually, she won gold medals on the uneven bars at both the European Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria and the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. And as part of the British women’s team, she won another gold in Glasgow, plus a silver in Sofia.
Becky also finished an excellent fifth on the uneven bars at the World Championships in Nanning, China, where Team GB finished sixth.
One of her teammates, 17-year-old Claudia Fragapane, who won four golds in Glasgow and is big friends with Becky’s 15-year-old gymnast sister Ellie, has even been nominated for the BBC TV Sports Personality of the Year award.
And to top off all the celebrations, the Downie sisters’ mum, Helen, got married this week in Thailand!
