You don’t often hear of swimmers getting penalised for speeding! But that’s exactly what happened to HUCKNALL AND LINBY DOLPHBINS in the last round of the JC Dobb Competition at the Hucknall Leisure Centre pool.
The B-grade gala operates cut-off times for fast swimmers, which meant Dolphins were stripped of fully 30 points in ‘speeding fines’, leaving them in bottom spot, despite some fabulous swims.
Only two of their seven wins actually yielded points. but there were also two terrific runners-up efforts and six third places, plus a whopping 15 personal-best (PB) times, which offered some consolation for the club.
Said a spokesman: “What a frustrating night! The amounts the swimmers knocked off their PBs caught us out. But they show the huge improvements they are making. All bodes well for a successful 2015!”
Superb wins for nine-year-old Isaac Bennison in the 25m freestyle and 12-year-old Bella Sheridan in the 50m breaststroke fell victim to the cut-off rule and the pair had to be content with fine PB times.
Some amazing relay swims also paid the penalty. The girls’ 12-and-under freestyle relay team of Sheridan, Ria Dennis, Libby Brandham and Courtney Hutson, who unleashed a turbo-charged last leg, finished well ahead of the pack -- as did the girls’ 12-and-under medley team of Hutson, Dennis, Gabe Moth and Lynden Johnson and the boys’ 14-and-under freestyle team of Mason Sims, Kieran Dermody, Max Jordan and Mark Turner, who were all too hot on the night!
The two wins that counted came from the in-form Moth in the 50m backstroke and Brandham in the 25m freestyle, both in PB times, while the runners-up were the versatile Sheridans in the 50m backstroke and the excellent 14-and-under medley relay team of Turner, Sims, Laura Hicklin and Hannah Fairy.
RESULT -- Radford 189 points, Ilkeston 169, Sutton 146, Portland 135, Kimberley 103, DOLPHINS 80.
