A season that started disastrously could yet end in glory for HUCKNALL LADIES in the British Water Polo League this weekend.

Having gained promotion last term, Hucknall started the 2014/15 campaign in Division Two with four defeats. But now they find themselves in the Women’s Championship Two Promotion play-offs after a sterling recovery.

The play-offs take place at Leeds University this Saturday and Sunday when the locals face Third Division champions English Roses Masters, Third Division runners-up City Of Birmingham and fellow Second Division outfit, Manchester Comets.

It was a 7-3 victory over Comets back in October that launched Hucknall’s revival. They went on to lick Liverpool Water Beatles 9-2 and finished sixth in the Second Division table. That took them into Group A of the Women’s Championship Two for the next phase of the season -- and they finished top after winning all four of their matches, against Water Beatles again, Penguin Rockhoppers, of London, Southampton and City Of Birmingham. They fired 51 goals, with two of the players, Cara Saunders and Rachael Endy, among the leading markswomen in the group.

Meanwhile Hucknall’s men’s team finished fourth in Division Three of the league -- six points behind champions Solihull -- after winning three, drawing one and losing three of their matches. They defeated South Derbyshire 14-10, Carlisle 11-8 and University of Bristol 14-5.

The second phase of the season took them into Men’s Championship Two, but they ended up bottom of the seven-team table. They won their opening game (10-8 against City Of Birmingham) and drew their second (10-10 against Exeter). But they lost their next five, although two were only by the odd goal.
