TWO hardy sisters from Hucknall are celebrating after landing medals at a kickboxing championship.

Fledgling fighters Josie (12) and Lucie Callan (ten), of Oakenhall Avenue, took prizes at the Junior Full Contact Council (JFCC) Five Nations show in Newark.

The event, which was open to kickboxers from Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England, attracted national and international champions of age groups, ranging from seven-year-olds to under-19s. More than 150 competitors took part.

The Hucknall youngsters, who are members of the Newark Martial Arts Club, did battle in the ten-to-12-year-olds’ under-35kg category.

Lucie was forced to settle for bronze after defeat in a semi-final against club stablemate Georgia Deakin.

But Josie celebrated a gold-medal performance by beating Georgia on a judges’ decision in the final. All fights were over three two-minute rounds.

Josie had qualified for the final with a revenge-victory over West Midlands fighter Kajool Patel, who had inflicted the Hucknall girl’s only two previous defeats in her ten-fight career.

Delighted dad Garry Callan was full of praise for his daughters, who only took up the sport a year ago.

The dedicated duo run up to four miles each night as part of a training regime. Garry is about to invest in a boxing ring so they can hone their skills in the garden at their home.
