Hucknall squander advantage

Hucknall fell to their third consecutive league defeat as Northwich took the points in a hard fought clash at Watnall Road.

Hucknall got off to the best possible start as a slide rule pass from Chris Baugh found Karl Slack who did well to hold off his marker before rifling home from the edge of the box.

The lead only lasted eight minutes though, Lee Dodgson playing a quick one-two in the box before sliding the ball past Jason Fisher.

Northwich then took control of the game with most of the football being played in the Hucknall half, Fisher turning away Paul Mooney’s 25-yard shot as the ball swerved in the air and Joe Guest firing high and wide.

Connor Roberts saw his free-kick go wide before home debutant Lee Mellon slid to keep Chris Luby’s shot off the line.

Vics took the lead just before half-time.They broke quickly following a Hucknall free-kick and after Dodgson robbed home skipper Corey Nightingale he ran down the left before whipping in a cross that Luby flicked home at the near post.

The second-half saw Northwich sit back and defend their lead, aiming to hit Hucknall on the break.

Roberts leant back and hit his shot over on 50 minutes and Dodgson should have extended the Vics lead when he was set free but side-footed wide.

Ben Good and Julian Topliss both saw efforts wasted as the Yellows tried to get an equaliser, while at the other end Luby remained a constant threat.

Sub Kyle Ludlow almost grabbed the home side a point late on as Jamie Brown got a good cross into the box, the Vics only half cleared their lines and Ludlow crashed a left foot shot onto the post.

Good had a header easily saved and in injury-time Topliss lifted the ball into the box and Ludlow’s shot from a well held by the Northwich keeper as the visitors held on.
