TWO late goals saw Linby Colliery Welfare overcome old rivals Southwell City 3-1 in the CMFL South on Saturday.
Linby’s squad was stretched with skipper Matt Peberday suspended, Ash Winfield, Joe McShane and Terry Henshaw all on holiday and Jon Dakers ill.
And it seemed a struggle was on the cards as just six minutes in Southwell took the lead when Jay Westwood tricked his way past two defenders and fired into the bottom corner from 18 yards.
Linby took some time to settle but on 22 minutes Jonty Bradshaw’s cross found Az Ryan whose shot flew over the bar.
Baz Payne then saw an effort saved by keeper Max Danby, while Matt Murphy’s half volley rattled against the post seven minutes before half-time as the visitors went into the break in front.
Sub Kyle McDermott, on for the injured Damien Mann, saw a shot well saved by Danby on 54 minutes, but three minutes later the scores were level as a sweeping ten pass move involving Ryan, Payne and Tom Coupe led to McDermott crossing to Andy Start who clinically side-footed home from eight yards out.
Linby were now looking to go on and win the game and on 66 minutes Ryan and Start combined to set up Murphy but his shot again struck the post.
Start and Murphy then played providers for McDermott on 76 but his shot was hacked off the line by a defender after beating the keeper.
Murphy and Coupe both saw further efforts go close, the latter cleared off the line, but the second goal finally came on 83 minutes when a Linby corner was only cleared to the edge of the area where man-of-the-match Ryan smashed in an unstoppable volley from 20 yards into the top corner.
And the win was capped three minutes later when good work from McDermott and Start set up Murphy who brilliantly beat two men before sliding the ball into the bottom corner and move Linby up to seventh spot in the league.
