Linby continue fine early form with home win

LINBY COLLIERY WELFARE made it two wins out of two in the Central Midlands League with a 2-0 win against a good and well-organised Mickleover RBL.

Linby could have led as early as the first minute when Matt Murphy saw an 18-yard shot hit the post.

As the game wore on the visitors began to dominate, but having watched RBL beforehand Linby’s tactics of playing five across midfield eventually paid dividends and their defence was again outstanding.

The closest the visitors came to opening the scoring in this period of domination was in the 19th minute when Matt Peberday cleared a Troy Black shot off the line.

Linby gradually worked themselves into the game and on 32 minute Damian Mann saw a 20-yard shot well saved by visiting keeper Ash Warner.

Seven minutes later Linby took the lead, as Terry Henshaw’s sweeping crossfield ball found Mann who in turn laid off to Dave Marlow, and when his shot from 25 yards was well saved by Warner, Martin Burke was quickest to react and put the loose ball into the roof of the net.

The match then went fairly quiet until the 66th minute when a nice Linby move down the right, involving Burke and Murphy, saw Chaz Niblett’s volley hit the bar.

On 76 minutes, Peberday’s free-kick found Az Ryan, whose header was inches over the top, but a minute later Burke, having scored the first goal, set up the second.

He cut out a stray pass and after intelligently picking out Murphy with a precise ball, Linby’s top scorer did the rest with a superb finish from 18 yards to wrap up the three points.
