SIX-hit LINBY COLLIERY WELFARE enjoyed the perfect preparation for their big upcoming Notts Senior League, Senior Cup final against champions Bulwell.
For they rounded off their Senior Division campaign with a 6-1 dismantling of Selston to make it eight games without defeat. They could yet cling on to third spot, although Awsworth Villa are only a point behind with a game still to play.
Lively Linby led from the fourth minute when a cross by left-back Jonathan Dakers was turned into the bottom corner by top scorer Matt Murphy.
The rest of the first half was scrappy and disjointed but the locals were woken up five minutes into the second when Selston equalised with a one-on-one from Alan Smith that looked suspiciously offside.
Baz Payne restored the advantage immediately with a volley into the roof of the net to finish a wonderful sweeping move, and on 56, Simon Marlow beat his man to plant a lovely shot in the corner.
Six minutes later, substitute Aaron Ryan pounced when the ‘keeper dropped Dakers’ free-kick. And two more goals in the last ten minutes, fashioned by man-of-the-match Murphy, capped the night.
First the striker glided past his marker to set up Damian Mann, who crashed in an 18-yard thunderbolt off the bar. And then Murphy cracked a left-footer into the top corner after fine work by Payne.
