LAST season’s runners-up, Royal British Legion A, look determined to go one better this time round in the hunt for the HUCKNALL EPA POOL LEAGUE championship.
For after the opening month of the season, Legion A are the only team blessed with an unblemished 100% record.
Their latest victory inflicted the first defeat of the campaign on fellow high-fliers Empire A, who fell 5-3.
Commanding Legion A led 4-0 at one stage, thanks to wins by Richard Devine, Ryan Orton, Tim McShane and the pairing of Devine and Nigel Burton.
The visitors picked up the next two legs, in the hands of Ashley Dobb and the pairing of Geoff Taylor and Steve Wood, before the home side sealed the points on leg eight, courtesy of Nigel Burton.
Legion A are now stalking the early-season leaders and defending champions Spot-On Low-C, who eased to a 6-2 success at home to Station Hotel (Hucknall) B.
It was all-square after the first two legs as Tim Hudson’s triumph was cancelled out by Alan Foster. But then Low-C went into overdrive, with Simon Thompson, Ryan Norris and the pairings of Dean Brittain and David Callow and Thompson and Norris at the wheel.
Apart from the top two, the only side yet to lose so far this term are surprise package Yew Tree, who raced to a 6-2 victory at Sherwood Ranger. After building a 3-0 lead early doors, they were always in control.
Elsewhere, Harrier, Royal British Legion B, Empire Muppets and Liberal Club all celebrated wins — although Harrier’s 5-3 eclipse of Green Dragon will count for nothing because they failed to report the result and were, therefore, deducted two points.
No such problems for Legion B, who coasted home 7-1 at Seven Stars, courtesy of Dave Stacey-King, John Toulson, Wayne Cartledge, Rob Simpson and the pairings of Pete Ford and Mick Longley and Dean Dymock and Malc Grocock.
Empire Muppets hit Chequers Inn B for six in a 6-2 romp, with Joe Etherington successful on singles and pairs, while Liberal recorded the same scoreline at Chequers Inn A.
