A YOUNG racer from Hucknall is producing some excellent performances in the Bambino Kart Club Championship.
Ruben Hage (seven), started karting on his sixth birthday and is now a consistent top-ten finisher in his own MARI machine.
The formula, designed for six to seven-year-olds, is the first of its kind in the country, enabling children with a passion for motorsport to compete at an earlier age than when F1 stars Lewis Hamilton or Jenson Button started their careers.
The Hucknall National Primary School pupil contested a close battle with 20 fellow youngsters in round six of the Bambino Championship at Fulbeck Kart Circuit near Newark last weekend.
With 15 seconds separating the entire field, the difference between first and ninth was just one second. Ruben set a personal best time of one minute 2.76 seconds, placing him sixth overall.
Ruben’s father Richard said: “With 50cc petrol engines, the karts are capable of speeds up to 35 mph.
“Although organised using a time trial format, wheel to wheel racing is inevitable. Despite their age, all of the children look and act like seasoned professionals, both on and off the track.
“No other form of motorsport enables children of this age to seriously hone their racing ability like karting, whilst also creating an understanding around the physical, mathematical and mechanical aspects of motorsport.”
The championship is spread around England and Wales and contains eight rounds with the best six scores to count. The next round is on September 15 at Glan Y Gors Kart Circuit in North Wales.
