Rampant Low-C storm to top in big-match charge

The HUCKNALL EPA POOL LEAGUE has new leaders after a remarkable clash between the top two teams.

It was expected to be tight and tense between Royal British Legion A and Spot-On Low-C.

But instead Low-C charged into an unassailable 5-0 lead to depose their visitors from first place.

The home side began as they meant to go on with Danny Butler unleasing an eight-ball clearance to beat Rich Devine.

Next came a win for Scott Oxford against Tim McShane and then another eight-ball clearance -- this time from Ryan Norris in a pairs-leg victory with Dean Britton against Devine and Nigel Burton.

The one-sided rout continued when Britton defeated Martin Bremner before the points were sealed by Simon Thompson’s triumph over Nidge Orton.

Legion A did fight back to take the last three legs, courtesy of Ryan Orton, Burton and the pairing of Nidge Orton and Bremner. But they were nothing more than consolations.

Low-C now head the table by one point, with a further two points back to Royal British Legion B and Empire A in third and fourth.

Legion B swept to a 6-2 victory at home to Yew Tree that included wins on singles and pairs by ever-reliable duo, Dave Stacey-King and Malc Grocock.

And Empire A disposed of bottom-of-the-table Chequers after a fright that saw them trail 2-1 at one stage.

Wins on the two pairs legs, by Tony Dobb and Joe Etherington and by Steve Wood and Craig Johnstone, got the home side out of trouble. And then, with the match balanced at 3-3, Etherington and Mark Wigginton wrapped up the points for the title-chasers.

The week’s remaining fixture resulted in a 5-3 success for Harrier at Green Dragon after they won four of the opening five frames.

SHANE Wood, of The Dragon, continues to head the league’s individual rankings table with 99 points. But second-placed Tony Dobb (Empire A) boasts the best strike rate of 90% and is now only four points behind.
