Spot the cup final aces

Jubilant Spot-On Low-C are on course for the double after landing the HUCKNALL EPA POOL LEAGUE’S Knockout Cup.

Low-C defeated Station Hotel (Hucknall) B 4-3 in a thrilling cup final -- and also head the league table needing one win from their last two games to wrap up the title.

They started the final on fire with Danny Butler and Dean Britton easing them into a 2-0 lead with wins over David Butler and Ian Wikeley respectively.

And although Paddy McShane halved the deficit for Station B by beating Scott Oxford, Low-C went 3-1 up when Simon Thompson proved too strong for Alan Foster.

However, mid-table Station B were determined not to roll over and squared the match up at 3-3 thanks to fine victories from Andrea Green, who beat Geoff Taylor, and Roger Green, who disposed of Simon Moralee.

That meant it all rested on the final leg, which was won by Low-C’s super-cool customer Ryan Norris against Paul Hibbard.

On the same night, the B Cup final was also being played for the Mellors Bicknell Shield.

This is a competition for teams knocked out of the main cup in the opening round -- and was won by Liberal Club, who beat Green Dragon 4-3.

The tie swung this way and that with Liberal leading 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 but always being pegged back until finally sealing victory.

The previous week, Low-C took a giant stride towards taking the league title when easing three points clear at the top.

They eased to a 6-2 success at home to Bestwood Village Social Club, courtesy of wins from Danny Butler, Dean Britton, Simon Thompson, Scott Oxford, Tim Hudson and the pairs combination of Butler and Thompson.

Three other league fixtures resulted in triumphs for Royal British Legion B, The Dragon and Empire A.

Legion B inflicted the 17th defeat of the season on bottom-of-the-table Chequers, cantering home 6-2.

The Dragon won 5-3 at Yew Tree in a match they were in control of from the moment Jill Dobb and Cliff Thompson had built a 2-0 advantage.

Tree’s bid to fight back were scuppered by Steve McIntyre, who was successful on singles and pairs.

Empire A were never in danger at Green Dragon, racing to a 7-1 victory in the hands of Michael Holmes-Parker, Joe Etherington, Robbie Roylance, Steve Wood, Mick Fowkes, Mark Wigginton and the pairing of Fowkes and Johnstone.

THE league’s individual rankings table is heading for an exciting finale with only three points separating the top six players.

Legion A duo Richard Devine and Tim McShane share first place with Dean Britton (Low-C) on 122 points.

But then come Tony Dobb (Empire) and Ryan Norris (Low-C) on 120, followed by Shane Wood (The Dragon) on 119.
