There was no question of 13 being an unlucky number for trailblazing leaders Royal British Legion A in the HUCKNALL EPA POOL LEAGUE.
For they overcame an early scare to extend their superb unbeaten run this season in their 13th match with a 5-3 victory at home to struggling Empire.
Defeats on the opening two legs for Mark Wigginton, against Shane Henson, and Mick Fowkes, against Shane Bettridge, meant Legion A had to dig deep. But a sequence of five wins on the trot by Steve Wood, Michael Holmes-Parker, Dave Wainwright and the doubles partnerships of Wood and Brian Woodward and Wainwright and Curly Johnstone soon had the match sewn up.
Inter-club rivals, Royal British Legion B, remain four points behind in second place after a see-saw thriller away to Station Hotel A that ended 5-3 in their favour. After easing into a 2-0 lead, thanks to Colin Draycott and Mark Hardstaff, Legion B allowed the home side to fight back to 3-3 before Malc Grocock and John Toulson bagged the last two legs. Paul Heath won on singles and pairs for Station A.
The other four fixtures of the week also went according to the formbook with victories for the sides lying third, fourth, fifth and sixth in the table, H2O, Station Hotel B, Liberal Club and The Dragon.
H2O were given a thorough test by resolute Chequers and needed a last-leg success from Dave Ellis, who had earlier triumphed on pairs too, before securing a 5-3 win.
Station B enjoyed a much easier ride at Bestwood Village Social Club, whose only winner in a 7-1 rout was Matt Dilger. The visitors’ victors were Sean Chauntry, Danny Butler, Andrea Green, John Nunns, Dave Butler and the pairings of Chauntry and Danny Butler and Roger Green and Paddy McShane.
Liberal inflicted the latest defeat on bottom team Green Dragon (6-2), while The Dragon felled Yew Tree 5-3 thanks to a last-leg decider won by Arthur Galloway.
