Top six pull clear of pack

A DEFINITIVE pecking-order is already beginning to emerge in the new HUCKNALL EPA POOL LEAGUE season as six sides pull clear of the rest.

Three teams — leaders Royal British Legion A, defending champions Spot-On Low-C and Yew Tree — remain unbeaten, while three others — Royal British Legion B, Empire A and Empire Muppets — make up the sextet three points ahead of the chasing pack.

Legion A extended their 100% start to the campaign to five matches by beating Bestwood Village Social Club 6-2 thanks to wins from Ryan Orton, Rich Devine, Tim McShane, Glynn Devine and the pairings of Rich Devine and McShane and Nigel Burton and Martin ‘Billy’ Bremner.

They continue to hold a handy game in hand over Low-C, who bounced back to winning ways with a 6-2 triumph at home to Chequers Inn B. Low-C were in command from the moment Colin Draycott and Dean Britton took the opening two legs. Below-par Ryan Norris lost on singles and pairs but further wins came the way of Simon Thompson, Tim Hudson, Simon Moralee and the pairing of Thomspon and Ben Samson.

Yew Tree were left kicking themselves after throwing away leads of 2-0 and 4-2 away to bottom-of-the-table Green Dragon, who celebrated their first point of the season. Cliff Thompson was Dragon’s hero with wins on singles and pairs.

Legion B also got sloppy after building a 4-1 advantage at Sherwood Ranger — until Malc Grocock secured a 5-3 triumph on the last leg.

But Empire A suffered no such hiccups, whitewashing Liberal Club 8-0, with the help of no fewer than three eight-ball clearances — two from Steve Wood and one from Dave Wainwright.

Empire Muppets not only won 6-2 at struggling Seven Stars but also completed the same scoreline in the resumption of their match against Station Hotel (Hucknall) B, which was abandoned earlier in the season after a dispute over the rules.

The week’s remaining fixture resulted in a 4-4 draw between Chequers Inn A and Harrier, who battled from behind to win the last two legs.
