On an extraordinary day, in which 22 wickets fell, the visitors triumphed by dismissing Notts for a second time for only 114, in 35.2 overs, with Tim Groenewald taking four for 41.

The success was Somerset’s first in Nottingham since 2007 and ended a run of three consecutive defeats. Their victory charge had come after they had been dismissed for only 161 in their own second innings, with the Nottinghamshire attack, led by Vernon Philander, skittling out their opponents in only 44 overs.

Philander claimed figures of three for 47 to give him seven wickets in the match, with the first of them being his former county captain.

The South African made a handful of appearances for the west country side in 2012 and clearly enjoyed bowling Marcus Trescothick for the second time in the match.

Trescothick’s middle stump was emphatically uprooted, leaving the batsman to contemplate making only the second pair of his career.

Notts had been unable to take all 20 wickets in any of their previous four matches this season but were able to dismiss Somerset for a second time thanks to a disciplined performance which saw Luke Wood, Jake Ball and Steven Mullaney each take two wickets, with Harry Gurney getting the other.

The home county lost both openers cheaply, as they began their chase either side of the third short rain delay of the day. Mullaney clipped Tim Groenewald to midwicket and then Brendan Taylor fell to Lewis Gregory.

Taylor, after an eye-catching start to county cricket, which has already produced two centuries, succumbed to his fifth consecutive lbw decision.

Greg Smith’s Nottinghamshire debut ended in disappointment. After only making eight in the first innings, he failed to get beyond four second time around as Trescothick clutched a low slip catch

Patel, at the crease for the second time in the day, fell to Craig Overton for one and Read followed him back, also for a single.

Riki Wessels offered some resistance, making 30 from 52 balls, before edging Lewis Gregory into the hands of Trescothick at second slip, his third catch of the innings.

Ball and Gurney fell after the extra half an hour had been asked for, leaving the home side still without a win from their opening five matches in the Championship.

Earlier Notts had added 31 runs to their overnight first innings score before losing their final two wickets. Ball had scored the necessary runs to secure a batting bonus point before hitting Jim Allenby to point for 9.

Patel made 56, scoring his runs from 122 deliveries, having hit six fours and a flat six over extra cover. He was eventually last out, hitting to long off to give Overton figures of four for 40.
