Kempton 2.40 EACH/WAY

I’m under no illusions that this is a terrific, competitive Pertemps Handicap qualifier. But I’ve been sweet on Emma Lavelle’s five-year-old son of former St Leger winner Brian Boru since last winter when he bagged a couple of smooth victories at Taunton as a novice. There were excuses for a disappointing performance at the Cheltenham Festival because he was still recovering from a course of antibiotics after an illness. And while he made no show at the same track last month, nearly all the stable’s horses have been needing their initial runs of the new season. Lavelle reports that the gelding has summered well and also says she is confident of more success from his current handicap mark. Today’s race represents a drop in trip from 3m to 2m5f, but he’s such a strong travelling sort that it’s unlikely to inconvenience him.
