Racing returns to Southwell on Thursday

After a quiet September with just the one meeting right at the start of the month, racing returns to Southwell on Thursday with a fixture over the jumps.

The meeting kicks off at 2.30pm with a handicap chase over three miles, and Jim Job Jones could reappear quickly after an easy win at Worcester last Friday, in which he provided the third leg of trainer Neil Mulholland’s first ever treble as a trainer.

Marufo could top the weights for trainer Tracey Bailey, a horse who was a dual winner at Southwell back in 2009.

This 12-year-old veteran is now two stone lower in the weights than his last winning mark just under two years ago when he won at Aintree which could give him a really good chance.

The feature race is at 3.35pm with a two and a half mile handicap chase with a £10,000 prize pot, with £6,500 of that going to the winner.

As you would expect for the prize fund on offer, it is a good contest and a very competitive one. Viking Ridge was a very easy winner at Huntingdon last time for Kim Bailey and would definitely go towards the head of many shortlists should he run, even more so if like last time he was ridden by AP McCoy.

Papradon returned to form last time with a game front running win at Uttoxeter and would be considered, as would the in-form Tregaro, who has won two of his last three races for trainer Mike Sowersby and has a very light weight to carry.

Kilfinichen Bay is a potential runner in the 4.40, a conditional jockeys handicap hurdle, for trainer Charlie Longsdon and jockey Charlie Deutsch.

This horse has won his last three races with the first of those coming on Ladies’ Day at Southwell back in August, and is certainly a big improver, although last time out winner Tarvini may have something to say to stop his winning sequence.

There will be a preview of the card before racing at around 2pm with raceday presenter Will Bowler, joined by commentator Mark Slater and William Hill Radio’s Dave Massey, with the first race coming up at 2.30pm

Also, if you purchase a ticket, then you are entitled to free entry to the first All Weather Championship fixture on Tuesday, 4th November.
