Six Wives storms to Southwell success

The feature race as Southwell hosted a seven race all weather Flat card this week was a five furlong fillies handicap with £10,000 in the total prize fund.

It went the way of Six Wives - a mare who has had her fair share of problems over the years.

But the patience of the owners, the Sexy Six Partnership, paid off handsomely here as she blazed a trail down the centre of the track and made all under Matt Hopkins, winning by a length and a half in the end.

The big aim is to get her to contest the Epsom Dash on Derby Day, although if last year’s ratings are anything to go by, she’d need to go up a stone to get a run.

Royal Marskell finally broke his maiden tag in the staying handicap over a mile and six furlongs under Tom Eaves for trainer Alison Hutchinson.

He has been very consistent without being victorious to date and connections are now hopeful now he knows how to win, he can go forward again.

Paul Cole sent a rare runner to Nottinghamshire, and it was a trip worthwhile as Cape Arrow took the closing three year old handicap under Martin Lane.

It was a very likeable performance from this long striding son of Cape Cross and there looks to be more races in him.

Glorious Star was also impressive for Newmarket trainer Ed Walker and jockey George Baker, who made his one ride on the day a winning one.

Meshardal won on Fibresand once again, giving trainer Ruth Carr her 13th winner of the season - a great start for a trainer who certainly does well with a medium sized string of horses.

Solarmaite couldn’t follow up the previous week’s 21-length rout, only managing third behind Roger Thorpe, who won well after a very slow beginning for trainer Deborah Sanderson, and Saakhen justified skinny odds to break his maiden for Richard Fahey and Tony Hamilton.

Michael Appleby also had a winner at the Chester May Meeting with Stellar Express winning in great style under stable jockey Andrew Mullen.

Southwell race just once more in May, and that’s on Monday, 19th May with a 2.30pm start.
