Southwell race a doddle for Jim Bob Jones

Southwell Racecourse had another seven-race jumps card on Thursday, and there were some particularly good performances from both horse and rider throughout the card.

The opening race, a three mile handicap chase, was a bit of a doddle for Jim Job Jones, a horse who had won at Worcester the previous week for jockey Mark Quinlan and trainer Neil Mulholland, who is having a real purple patch at present, in the end beating Inandover by a heavily-eased 12 lengths.

There was a dramatic finish to the next race, a two mile handicap chase, when there were three in line at the final fence before Macs Grey came up out of Robbie McCarth’s hands and took a crashing fall, leaving Tempuran to score for Sam Twiston-Davies and David Bridgwater ahead of Tri Nations in second.

Only four horses lined up in the feature race at 3.35, but as favourite Viking Ridge struggled for fluency and ran poorly, there was a great finish between Tregaro and Abbey Storm, with the latter rallying to get back up after being headed at the last fence - a great ride by Noel Fehily for trainer Donald McCain.

Sam Twiston-Davies rode his second winner of the day at 4.10 when giving Jigsaw Financial a peach of a ride for trainer Laura Young, the first time the pair had combined with a runner.

Trainer Charlie Longsdon then took the next two races on the card, firstly Kifinichen Bay won what turned out to be a match race with Right To Rule, ridden by Charlie Deutsch, by a wide margin - his fourth win in a row since moving to his current yard.

The very promising Germany Calling then beat off Buy Back Bob in a good duel under a canny Noel Fehily ride.

Germany Calling ran in the Supreme Novice Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival and was put away after that to preserve his novice status for this season, and after an easy win at Uttoxeter and now this victory, that looks an inspired decision.

The final race went to Over The Air for Nico De Boinville and John Spearing, gaining a deserved success after hitting the crossbar a few times without getting her head in front.

The next meeting at Southwell is on Thursday, 23rd October, for more information visit www.southwell-racecourse.co.uk.
