Storms fail to spoil sport at WInter League match

Gale force winds battered Sherwood Forest Farm Fishery for round three of the Winter League, but the fish certainly didn’t seem to mind as excellent sport was had by everyone on Sherwood Lake.

Coming out on top from peg 25 was Ian Boyd with 29lb 9oz, including a 10lb specimen, all taken on method feeder to the far bank.

Pushing him all the way from peg 23 was Joe Wheeldon with 27lb 10oz of carp and skimmers on the pole and pellet at 11m.

Wayne Heywood claimed 3rd spot with 17lb 5oz of ide, skimmers and perch.

Winter League Round Three, Sherwood Lake, 20 fished: 1st Ian Boyd, Woodhouse Angling Centre 29-09, 2nd Joe Wheeldon, Rivendell 27-10, 3rd Wayne Heywood, Subfish 17-04, 4th Ivor Birkin, Rivendell, 12-05, 5th Jim Mahon, Glapwell AC, 11-02.

The wind spoilt the day again at the Sunday Open on Holmedale Lake for most for presenting anything on the pole.

Winner Nigel Shipman alternated between the pellet fished on the bomb and a small cage feeder with micros cast to the island from peg 35, landing 14 carp to 10lb throughout the match, finishing with a total of 73lb 7oz.

In second Danny Crewe fished a small cage feeder with pellet cast tight to the island at peg 39, also landing 14 carp to 7lb and a respectable 62lb 3oz.

Open Match, Holmedale Lake, Sunday 9th February, 17 fished: 1st Nigel Shipman Sherwood Forest Fishery peg 35, 73-7-0, 2nd Danny Crewe Subfish, peg 39, 62-3-0, 3rd Brian Elliott Sherwood Forest Fishery peg 19, 47-0-0, 4th Pete Hodgetts Sherwood Forest Fishery peg 45, 40-9-0, 5th Phil Carline Subfish tackle peg 14, 32-7-0, 6th Lee Placket Sherwood Forest Fishery peg 9, 25-5-0.

The Wednesday Open on Holmedale attracted very low attendance, maybe due to the forecast of a big storm, but it was just a normal day in the end with strong gusting winds and rain.

Andy Lakey was back in the top spot. Drawn at peg 39, he fished a small pellet feeder cast to the island, landing one 4lb bream and seven carp to 6lb, winning with 31lb 2oz.

Mick Langton, fishing the pole on two lines with pellet at 9m, landed three carp to 6lb and six bream to 5lb for runners-up spot.

Wednesday Open, 5th February, Holmedale Lake, 12 fished: 1st Andy Lakey Worksop Angling peg 39, 31-2-0, 2nd Mick Langton Sherwood Forest Fishery peg 46, 26-1-0, 3rd Geoff Mawby Gateford Angling Supplies peg 27, 25-2-0, 4th John Thomas Sherwood Forest Fishery peg 32, 18-12-0.

The Tuesday Open silver fish match on Sherwood Lake is steadily growing with more anglers taking part.

Winner on 4th February was Woodseats Angling boss Mark Holmes who, drawn on the end peg 24, fished the pole and caster on the deck at 12m, loose feeding with the catty over the top.

He landed a steady stream of roach, skimmers and ide to 12oz.

In second place again John Holmes (no relation) fished the pole and maggot over ground bait for 11lb 8oz of skimmers and roach to 8oz.

Tuesday Open, 4th February, Sherwood Lake, 15 fished: 1st Mark Holmes Woodseats Angling peg 24, 14-2-0, 2nd John Holmes Woodhouse Angling peg 8 11-8-0, 3rd John Urruty Alfreton Angling peg 21, 9-15-0, 4th Mick Lysaght Rivendell AC peg 12, 7-12-0.

The wind spoiled the day again for most in the Sunday Open on 2nd February, but it was the same angler at the top.

Mick Langton, enjoying a good run, drew peg 51 and fished the pole and soft 4mm pellet on two lines.

Struggling for bites in the first half of the match, with only one fish in the net, the carp turned up and he landed 15 more to 8lb for a total of 54lb 15oz.

Second was John Bleakley, who was drawn at peg 19 and fished ledgered meat and pellet cast into the bay for seven carp to 9lb.

In the Wednesday Open on Holmedale on 29th January it was again peg 32 that produced the winner.

This time it was Pete Hodgetts, fishing the pole with pellet and maggot on two lines.

He landed 16 carp to 8lb, and 12 of his fish were caught in the first two hours, having only four more in the last three hours as the temperature dropped.

Second place went to Andy Lakey with roach to 1lb and carp to 4lb on pole and maggot.

Wednesday Open, 29th January, Holmedale Lake, 16 fished: 1st Pete Hodgetts Sherwood Forest fishery peg 32, 57-6-0, 2nd Andy Lakey Worksop Angling peg 9, 54-0-0, 3rd Terry French Leegem Tackle peg 45, 52-15-0, 4th Mick Langton Sherwood Forest Fishery peg 14, 37-15-0, 5th Geoff Mawby Gateford Angling Supplies peg 51, 21-15-0.

John Urruty came out on top in the Tuesday Open on Sherwood on 28th January.

He fished the waggler and maggot, cast to the middle of the lake, loose feeding every cast.

Ater a slow start he started catching a small roach every cast, landing over 100 fish to 4oz, weighing a total of 16lb 8oz.
