Witness Bolsover Castle Siege event this Bank Holiday

It is the 14th August 1644. England’s terrible Civil War that would cost a King his head and define English Parliamentary democracy, has been raging for nearly 2 years.

On the 6th July the King’s General in the North, William Cavendish has been defeated at Marston Moor and gone into exile.

The Garrison of his beloved Bolsover Castle nervously await the arrival of the Parliamentarian armies...

Visitors can make their way through the Siege lines and visit the attackers and the royalist defenders as they listen to music and stories of the Civil War.

The Main Arena will have smoked filled battle displays as the outer walls of the Castle are attacked with sword, musket and pike.

An event to catapult all the family into the awesome spectacle of a castle under attack, as visitors can witness the drama first-hand as the Siege unfolds throughout the day.

Younger members of the family can take part in their own battle drills in the children’s arena, whilst history lovers can listen to a talk presented by historian John Taylor in the Riding House.

Lucy Hutchings, English Heritage head of events, said: “This is the first time that we have had a Siege event at Bolsover Castle and we are delighted to be able to tell the story of the 1644 event in this anniversary year with some action-packed displays.”
