PCSO Sue Braddock is one of the many people giving up her free time to help her neighbours – and residents across the town – who are affected by the social restrictions.

In the wake of the outbreak, she instantly joined the Hucknall Community Care coronavirus volunteer group on Facebook to help those stuck at home and self-isolating without their own support networks.

“It is great to be part of something positive during such a difficult time. I’d urge anyone who has the opportunity, to help those in need.”

The group, which now has more than 5,200 members, was set up by Papplewick Green resident Kate Edwards, who has been staggered by the response.

The Facebook group is complementing Ashfield District Council to ensure all bases are covered.

Each volunteer was initially designated streets where they have posted leaflets containing their details to offer assistance with things like shopping, fetching urgent supplies, posting mail or just a friendly phone call.

Kate said: "We managed to cover around 95 per cent of the streets in the town in just a few days.

“I’ve been really inspired by the sense of community here since I came to Hucknall a few years ago, and to see people looking out for each other in this way is truly amazing.”

She added: “I’m really grateful to those who have come forward to help out and would like to say a huge thank you to local companies Another Mother Ltd and Nottingham Printing Ltd for their donations."

Despite changes to the lockdown arrangements this week, volunteers are continuing with essential activities while maintaining appropriate safeguards.

They must still follow rules keeping themselves and others safe by washing hands regularly, wearing gloves and staying at least two metres away from others.
