The big 40 was one of several suggestions that students have made to mark the fact that the academy has served the local community with lifelong learning for the past 40 years.

An academy spokesman said: “Our aims throughout the 2013/14 academic year are to celebrate 40 years of education being delivered from the site, to recognise how students lives have been positively impacted upon by receiving this learning and to ensure that Sutton Community Academy remains the heartbeat of the community for the next 40 years.

Students are able to join us at the age of 11 and stay with us - be it as a school child, sixth former or adult learner, until they are 100 plus!”

A whole programme of events to mark the anniversary has been planned for this academic year including a great ‘birthday bake off’ and an open evening for former students in January.

The academy is also working with the Idlewells Shopping Centre and Sutton Library to put on displays about how it has changed.
