ANTI-VANDAL CAMERAS FOR TRAINS

CAMERAS are to be installed on passenger trains running on the Robin Hood Line through Hucknall, Bulwell and Newstead to help try and catch rail vandals.

The high-tech cameras will be able to record images of vandals and yobs who put lives in danger by throwing debris on to the line.

The images can then be used by police to prosecute the criminals.

Midland Mainline plans to install the cameras on its new 125 million fleet of high-speed trains.

Malcolm Brown, sales and marketing director for the Derby-based train company, said he believed the cameras would act as a deterrent.

He said: CCTV cameras will be able to capture on film the perpertrators of these crimes in the same way as they would in a shopping mall, a city centre or car park.

This will enable British Transport Police to identify and arrest persistent offenders.

Added Mr Brown: High-speed trains have a braking distance of nearly half a mile.

What chance has any driver of legging back along the track and catching the vandals?

Having the cameras on board means they can be caught at a later date.
