Nottinghamshire County Council said reducing the size of general waste bins from 240 litres (52 gallons) to 180 litres (40 gallons) would cut its £20m landfill costs by encouraging recycling.

The authority proposed the idea as part of a budget plan to help save £30m in the next financial year and £77m by 2018, but readers fear the move could backfire.

Kerry Dawson said: “The smaller bin idea IS rubbish, not happy about it! I can just about manage with a full size bin on the fortnightly collection system. I think it’s a silly idea.”

Lee Jones said: “It would just lead to more fly-tipping.”

Karen Btcc Brooks said: “What a complete and utter, stupid idea! Streets full of rotting waste. People already struggle with the size bin we have, myself included. It would be two to three bin bags a fortnight building up that I couldn’t dispose of!

“Rethink with reality and not optimism. What about the cost to reduce the size of the bins to start with? How about you have recycle bin on every estate for bottles, clothing and paper etc instead, on parks or maybe per street? Just an idea

Linda Smith said: “Smaller bins are perfectly fine if they go back to collecting bins weekly again. I think not.”

Jodi Price said: “And what do you plan to do with the old larger bins? Will they be recycled? Or will they become an addition to the landfills?”

Ash Carlin said: “Totally ridiculous idea as usual spending money on ideas that will cause huge problems for households.”
