Ashfield MP Gloria De Piero is urging residents to shop small and eat local ahead of ‘Small Business Saturday’ this weekend.

The day celebrates the contribution of entrepreneurs and small firms.

Launched in 2013, its aims are to boost to local high streets across the country and in 2014, 16.5 million people visited a local independent store – 2.7m more than on Small Business Saturday in 2013.

Ms De Piero says she is a huge fan of the local high street and she is backing businesses in Ashfield to take full advantage of the campaign on a key shopping day in the year in the run-up to Christmas by encouraging residents to shop locally.

The day aims to give a long-term boost to trade and give a lift to the high streets.

In the run up to Saturday Gloria paid a visit to a number of shops, including Jack Wood Butchers in Eastwood and Million Waves beauty salon on Station Street, Kirkby.

Ms De Piero said: “Small independent businesses like Million Waves are the lifeblood of our local high streets and it’s vital that we get behind them and show how much
we value the service they provide.

“The great thing about our constituency is that it’s full of lots more brilliant local businesses too.

“I’ve got my fingers crossed that with the help of Ashfield folk, Saturday will be a bumper day for small businesses owners.”

Melissa the owner of Million Waves added; “Small Business Saturday is a great idea. We will get behind any initiative that is trying to revive the high street.”
