Bestwood Village road must stay open

The road, which is the only direct route from Bestwood to Bulwell and the rest of Nottingham, had to be blocked to traffic for 11 days at the end of last year during persistent heavy rain.

Coun Beeston told the meeting that as far back as 2009, he had a site meeting with Notts County Council highways officer Ian Parker and warned that the road could be severely inundated by floodwater because of poor drainage.

“I don’t want this to happen ever again,” he added.

Notts County Council’s representative for Bestwood, Coun Chris Barnfather (Con), said work was now under way to provide a remedy.

He read a report by the county council’s project engineer for highway design and maintenance, Steve Wyld, about proposed action to stop further flooding.

The report stated that an investigation of the main flooding spot near the city boundary had proved to be ‘complicated’.

“But we have found a drain running from the highway along the bottom of a dismantled railway embankment towards a mill race pond,” the report continued.

“The end of the pipe has been buried and lost. But we are now at the stage where we have identified the possible location of the buried outfall.

“This area will be excavated to find the pipe in the week beginning Monday June 11. This will happen while our highways operations team are carrying out footway and carriageway resurfacing work, which will start in late May.”

Mr Wyld’s report also referred to anti-flooding proposals for other parts of the village.

These include the junction of Park Road with Moor Road, where a highway gulley was found to be blocked.

“We are unable to clear the blockage with a jetting unit,” the report stated. “But work will be carried out to excavate and repair the damaged/blocked pipework before the road is resurfaced in August.”
