Blidworth centre’s £1.7m upgrade to help dogs in need

Thousands of dogs are abandoned or can no longer be looked after by their owners every year - and a Blidworth rehoming centre is on its way to completing a £1.7m upgrade to help those in desperate need.

October is National Dog Adoption Month and Jerry Green Rehoming Centre, in Blidworth, is helping unite animal lovers with abandoned dogs.

Last year the centre was able to rehome 104 dogs - that’s 104 dog’s lives that have been transformed thanks to the centre.

Now the centre - which employs four people and has many volunteers - is hoping to help even more dogs with the introduction of its brand new, purpose build facility.

It is set to open in March and will have three kennels which will cater for 27 dogs as well as a training centre.

Centre manager Sapphire McInnes said: “It’s going to be fantastic and will be so much better than what we previously had. That means we can hopefully help more dogs.”

The former kennels were built in the 80s and were converted farm buildings.

Around 90 per cent of dogs at the centre are due to people no longer being able to care for them through relationship break ups, lack of spare time to care for the dog, or losing their home.

She said: “When you see a dog go home with its news owners, it’s just an amazing feeling. It’s very rewarding and that’s why we do what we do.”

The centre assist with the dog for the rest of its life.

The homing process helps to match the right dog with the right family and the centre will always be at hand for after adoption advice.

Their aim is to cater for the individual needs of each dog and to find them the right home and family.

She said: “If we have rehomed a dog and for some reason the owner can no longer care for them we always take them back. It’s ongoing support.”

But there are so many dogs waiting for a new home.

She said the centre has a waiting list of 30 dogs a month.

“If we had room for 100 dogs it would be filled.”

She urged those wanting a dog to think of the centre before going to breeders. “It’s a bit of myth that we don’t get pedigree dogs, we get many desirable breeds.

“And this way you are helping give a dog a home rather than lining breeders’ pockets.”
