College opens training salon

A Mansfield Woodhouse school has launched a new high street training salon for aspiring hairdressers, to give students real on-the-job experience.

The Salon @ MC, Manor Academy’s training salon, opened its doors for the first time on Monday 8th September with an exclusive launch event.

Miss Mansfield and Sherwood Forest, Grace Turner attended the event to welcome the salons first clients through its doors.

The salon, located at 1 Portland Street, in Mansfield Woodhouse, opened for its first day of business on Tuesday 9th September.

The course in run through Manor College - which used to be the academy’s sixth form, and offers a wide range of vocational training, as well as conventional A Level courses.

Tracey Morley, owner of the salon and teacher of hair and beauty at Manor Academy, said: “It’s been great to see so many people showing an interest in the salon.

“Our Manor College students are really looking forward to getting to work.”

The students in the salon are level 2 and level 3 hairdressing students, and will be monitored at all times by owner, Tracey and salon manager, Melanie Read, who between them share over 50 years of hairdressing experience.

Tracey added: “Because it is a training salon we can reflect that in our prices.

“Our cuts start from as little as £5 and our colours start from £15, which is a fraction of what you might spend elsewhere but the quality will be second to none.”

Manor College is part of the Mansfield Learning Partnership (MLP), which gives students access to a wide opportunity of internships, career master-classes and participation in creative events such as the Mansfield Film Festival.

All students get the chance to take part in an exchange trip to China and other BTEC programmes include engineering and product design.

The salon will be open Monday – Saturday, offering a late night service on Friday.

The students will work alongside a self-employed beautician who will also operate from the salon offering nail treatments, facials, massage and waxing.
