COMMUNITY NEWS - Kirkby

The Rev Wendy Patchell took Holy Communion on Sunday week. Janet Baldwin and Maureen Sharman were readers. Ann Hilton read prayers. Christina Vardy and Kate Hurt administered the chalice. The sidesmen were Anne Allcock and Sandra Smith. Sally Needham and Oliver Dodd served morning coffee.

Inner Wheel

Members looked at photographs of common everyday items taken from unusual angles at Monday week’s meeting. Following dinner and s short business meeting members made arrangements for an afternoon social event and to send delegates to the national conference at Telford. Future activities were discussed, including a river trip. The meeting was the reminded about the forthcoming ‘Evening with Judith Hibbert’ to be held at the Post Mill Centre, South Normanton. The event’s theme will be the 90th anniversary of Inner Wheel UK. The next meeting will be on Monday 14th April.

Ashfield Chess

The first team beat Newark 3-2 with wins for John Molyneux and draws from Pablo Padilla Cabero, Steve Burke, Andy Toothill and Derek Jervis. The second team went down 4-1 against Gambit with only Geoff Gibson and Bob Taylor managing draws. The third team returned to winning ways beating Radcliffe and Bingham 3-2, Neil Graham and Steve Bak both won. Draws were gained by Stan Cranmer and Pete Clarke.

Church of Christ

Dennis Faulks led the morning meeting on Sunday week. The Old Testament reader was Eric Faulks, Polite Mukange read from the New Testament. Rex Foster served communion. Evening leader and reader was David Wilson.

Women’s Institute

Vice-chairmen Carol Garrett chaired Wednesday week’s meeting and organised a quiz. Raffle winners were Maureen Ashby, Janet Law and Valerie Simpson. Teas were served by Norma Boot and Teresa Rawding. New member Victoria Pickup was welcomed and Caron Kelly presented with her new member pack. Beryl Strange, Barbara Smith, Enid Oliver and Pauline Lewis received birthday greetings. The next meeting will be on 2nd April when a speaker from Wetherspoons will give a presentation. The sales table will be dedicated to soap items.

Our Lady RC Church

Fr F. Higgins led mass on Sunday week. Hannah Turton read the lesson. Members of the offertory procession were Delia McGibbon, Alex and Isabella Taylor, James, Harriett and George Wake. Rex Clarke and John Fejfer took the collection. Maranatha played the music. Communion was served by Delia McGibbon, Jerry Herrington, Herve Poveda, Jim Turton and Colin Kibbler.

3rd Brownies

Wendy Osborne, assisted by Abbi Grundy, led 3rd Kirkby Brownies on Monday week. The girls continued with their ‘I’m a Survivor’ badge, made elephant masks and played games. The meeting ended with Brownie Bells.

7Cs Christian F’ship

David and Glenys Holloway, Mark Roxburgh, David Thorpe and Tom Ward led Sunday week’s worship. Pastor England and Mark Roxburgh served communion. Members then watched a DVD of a service given by preacher Louie Giglio. The midweek meeting will be a planning session for future church activities.

50 Plus

President Amy Butler opened the meeting which took the form of a Faith Tea. Tea hostesses were Phyllis Newby, Mary Pearson, Pat Allsop and Sandra Otczyk. Raffle winners were Jennifer Thornley, Eileen Clarke, Valerie Woolnough, Janet Ellis, Marion Beryl and Jan Blakelock.

Trinity Methodist The Rev Mick Dilley led the second Lent communion service on Sunday week. Mike Oliver assisted. Carole Taylor was communion steward. Church steward was Christine Nuttall who also read a lesson with Maureen Shilling.

The door steward was Margaret Campbell. Nancy Shipley lit the Lent candle. Margaret Hensby placed the bread under the Lent Cross. Jean Whitehead, Mari Teuter and Giulia Celii collected the offering. Fay Shackleton played the organ. Jeanette Dilley manned the media desk. Trinity Singers performed ‘Jesus tempted in the desert’. Margaret Hensby donated church flowers. Margaret Thorpe served coffee in aid of the Methodist Mission to Mali.

1st Guides

Claire Sharman led the girls in organising a newspaper fashion show, using nursery rhyme characters as a theme. Little Miss Muffet, Bo Peep and Incy Wincy Spider being the favourites. Three new members were welcomed, joining from Huthwaite and 1st Sutton Brownies respectively. The Challenge badges were reviewed, with Minnie Davenport being awarded her second Challenge badge.

Forest St Baptist

The Art and Keep Fit classes met on Tuesday week. There was a Messy Church planning session on Wednesday week. The Rev Ros Wilkes led Sunday week’s communion service. Jane Brierley and Dennis Gregory were servers. The communion offering was dedicated to the Tear Fund. Claire Crowder read the lesson. Audrey Peake and Irene Wass served morning coffee. Ray Forrest took the evening service. The reader was Audrey Peake. Music for the day was by Margaret and Doreen Homer. Last Monday Dennis Gregory led a ramble around Linby and Papplewick to view the daffodil and snowdrop display. The Ladies Fellowship was opened with devotions by Margaret Homer. Ladies began rehearsals for their forthcoming week-end event to be held on 5th and 6th April. Maureen Osborne served refreshments. The pianist was Doris Hickton.

Hill Methodist Church

The first part of the Lent course was held on Monday week. The Genesis Youth Group also met. Wednesday week’s mother and toddler session was followed by the fellowship led by Yvonne Hague the speaker was mike Oliver. Betty Grice played the organ. The DIY group worked on the church in the evening. Dance class rehearsed on Thursday week. Representatives from the hill joined with friends from Trinity and Forest Rd Methodist churches for a fellowship led by Lenna Purseglove on Friday week. New songs for worship were presented. On Saturday week Hill members joined the United Prayer Breakfast at the Community Church Kirkby. The weekend continued with the Hill joining with Hucknall Methodists for a service led by Rev David Winstanley on Sunday week.

St Thomas’ Church

The Rev Neil Popham took Holy Communion on Wednesday week. The Lent Group then met in the church hall before taking a shared lunch prior to the carers and toddlers drop-in session. John Walker manned the parish office in the evening. Sunday week’s communion was led by the vicar, assisted by Reader Eric Russ who gave the address. John Walker read a lesson. Prayers were by Pauline Russ. Children’s church was by Pauline Howlett, Sarah Clarke, Sophia Popham and Dyan Dixon. The pianist was Stuart Bradshaw. Alan Dykes was church steward. Eric Russ administered the chalice. Pauline Russ and Pat Cook served morning coffee.

Rotary Club

Vice President Paul Riley led the meeting, welcoming Rotn Noel Harrison who delivered greetings from the Sherwood Sunrisers. Rotn Jim Moulton brought greetings from the Rossendale Lancs club. Vice President Paul thanked everyone who had been involved in the successful antiques valuation event at ‘What’s it worth’ held at St Wilfrid’s Church Kirkby. Rotn Noel Harrison, the District Membership cochairman spoke on current initiatives to boost rotary membership generally outlining several successful schemes. Rotn Ron Walker gave the vote of thanks.
