Conservation area planned for Bulwell

Nottingham City Council’s principal conservation area, Tom Street, said: “As a market town, Bulwell has a distinctive identity and long history which is worthy of being recognised and celebrated.

“The town centre still has its historic street pattern and market, its attractive relationship with the River Leen and many of its historic buildings.

“The use of locally-quarried stone is a particularly distinctive feature of the town and it is used on a range of properties from churches and schools to small terraced houses.”

Mr Street said that making a conservation area would help the council to protect and enhance Bulwell’s heritage.

This status would also allow the council and other groups to apply for grants from organisations like the Heritage Lottery Fund to repair and restore historic buildings and spaces in the town.

When people apply for planning permission in a Conservation Area, the Council has to consider the effect that the work will have on the area’s special character.

The initiative would additionally mean tighter controls on work that can be done without planning permission.

A letter to residents includes a map showing a draft boundary for the conservation area.

A survey website, www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/BulwellConservation, has been set up giving information and inviting feedback.

An open consultation session will take place at Bulwell Riverside Centre, Lower Main Street, on Wednesday, June 8, between 2pm and 7pm.

The consultation period ends on Thursday, June 16.
