Conservatives maintain seat for Gedling

Voters went to the ballot boxes across the county on Thursday 2nd May to make their cross count and blue was victorious.

Residents across Papplewick, Linby, Newstead, Bestwood and Ravenshead made their vote count in the Newstead ward to re-elect the former police superintendant into office.

The married father of two, who lives in Ravenshead and also sits on the Ravenshead Parish Council and Gedling Borough Council, was pleased by the support he received.

“I’m delighted the residents in the Newstead ward have voted me back in,” said Coun Barnfather. “I’ve worked hard for them over the past four years and seen some tangible results and will continue to work hard for them.”

The Conservative candidate collected 1,522 votes, which accounts for 50.6 per cent, beating back opposition from the UK Independence Party (UKIP) candidate Mark Brinsley-Day, who managed 742 votes at 24.7 per cent.

Shortly behind with 21.6 per cent of the vote was Labour’s Linford Gibbons, who scooped 650 votes, whilst the Liberal Democrat’s Paul Buxton brought up the rear with 92 votes which only amounted to three per cent.

Coun Barnfather added: “It’s disappointing that the Conservatives have lost control at County Hall but it is now up to us to be an effective opposition. With Labour only securing a one seat majority we will be keeping them on their toes. I hope they continue to do the best for the whole of Nottinghamshire and not just the areas under Labour control. We have tried to be fair for every child in the county because youngsters in Linby and Papplewick deserve the same facilities such as parks as children in more deprived areas like Bassetlaw have received.”

Coun Barnfather said he hoped the new administration will continue with the planned projects already earmarked for the area including the new Youth Centre for Hucknall. We have had fantastic success in securing play areas across the county including the skate park in Ravenshead, new play area in Papplewick and Newstead and hope that this work continues.”
