Dogwalkers hit out over park security patrols

Under new rules, dogs are prohibited from the grassed areas and must be on leads at all times.

Dog-owner Jenny Whitehead told Chad she and her husband felt intimidated by the van’s presence and nearby residents had attended a meeting held by a representative of the trustees.

She added: “I spoke to people who were present at the meeting, which was not very well publicised, who expressed their concerns and were worried about what may happen if they refused to comply with the rules.

“What is more worrying is that I have just seen one of the so-called bouncers and find it quite disturbing that people like that are being used to supervise decent, law abiding members of the public in an area they have been using for years for the purpose of walking their dogs.”

Chad spoke to other dogwalkers at the much-loved recreation ground last week who gave a mixed reaction to the new measures.

John Adams, of South Park Avenue, Berry Hill, said they were unnecessary as most dog owners acted responsibly.

“My dog is perfectly good,” he said. “As are the majority of dogs on the park. It is just one or two people who let the side down.”

Melanie Vason, of Lichfield Close, said; “We understand about not letting dogs on the play area or the track, but if they cannot run on the grass there is no point.”

Yvonne Smith, of Green Lane, Berry Hill, said: “I would hope that the trustees would work for the good of the people and not to alienate them. This is a precious place as a green space and should be kept as open as possible.”
