Marcin Krzyszt Adamczak, 30, of Saddlers Close, Forest Town, admitted driving while above the legal limit.

The court heard police were following Adamczak’s Volvo on Mansfield Road, at Spion Kop, on July 3 at around 3.30am, when he hit the kerb.

Robert Carr, prosecuting, said officers saw he was unsteady on his feet and had to balance himself on the car.

A breath test revealed he had 72 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, when the legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

Melanie Hoffman, mitigating, said: “His wife had left him the week before. He had been drinking on that night and for some reason he decided to get into the car.

“He wasn’t thinking straight. He takes full responsibility.”

She said he worked as a production manager in a popcorn factory and drove himself, and his two brothers, to work there.

Mansfield magistrates banned him from driving for 20 months and fined him £461. He was also ordered to pay court costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £46.
