Luke Christopher Shaw, 22, of Claters Close, Retford, initially denied assaulting fellow guest James Sykes at the Packet Inn on Bescoby Street on September 10.

Later, a Mansfield magistrates court, he admitted using the two-foot-long stick to hit Mr Sykes on the shoulder, causing bruising.

The court heard that the assault happened after Mr Sykes pushed Mr Shaw’s girlfriend.

Mr Shaw has no previous convictions and was in drink at the time. The party spilled out into the street, the police were called and Mr Shaw was arrested.

Magistrates imposed a 12-month community order and ordered him to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work. He must also pay a criminal courts charge of £150, costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £60.

No compensation was ordered as the family have decided to put the matter behind them.
