A “furious” parent has slammed a Buxton priest for telling seven and eight-year-old children that Father Christmas was not real.

Father Dennis Higgins told youngsters from St Anne’s Primary School that Santa was not real while giving mass at St Thomas More secondary school on Thursday.

The mass was attended by both the young pupils – in year three – and 11 and 12-year-olds from the secondary school.

One parent, who did not wish to be identified, said: “How dare he say such things to such young children? To try and take away the magic of Christmas is just plain mean.”

Father Higgins is based at St Anne’s Catholic Church, in Buxton.
