Former Nottingham Forest players to tackle charity match in memory of Hucknall man

Craig Dowhan, 31, of Sandy Lane, died when the car he was travelling in with friends hit a telegraph pole on Longdale Lane, Ravenshead.

Another man and Craig’s friend, Adam Burton, also died in the tragedy.

Craig’s dad, Chris, and best friend Paul Prewett, have joined forces to organise an event to bring together all of Craig’s friends in a day of remembrance.

“It wasn’t until Craig died that we really recognised how popular he was,” said dad Chris, who has big connections with football through his time spent as assistant coach at Hucknall Town.

“There were over 270 people at his funeral and since his death we have heard so many heart-warming stories about our son from his friends, which has been a great comfort to us .”

Craig attended National School and grew up playing football for Nottingham Forest and Notts County academies and although he didn’t get signed up, continued to play for local teams.

“Craig played centre mid-field but his love of motorbikes overtook his football when he got older. But even from a very young age he was fascinated by bikes,” remembers Chris.

Chris has signed up footballing stars and friends from Forest’s past, Gareth Williams and Craig Armstrong for the football tournament to be held on Saturday 12th July at Rolls-Royce Leisure.

And England’s ladies’ assistant head coach, Marieanne Spacey, is set to play too, with football memorabilia also up for grabs during the day.

The tournament will be 11-a-side with two semi-finals, culminating in a final. Kick off is 12.45pm with teams gathering an hour earlier paying an entry fee and spectators being asked for a £1 donation.

Family entertainment is also on the cards with a barbecue, inflatables, DJ, ice-cream van and face painting as well as a footy workshop for youngsters led by Scott Corah.

“It’s amazing how a game of football can bring everybody together,” added Chris who also hopes to put on his boots and will be supported by his wife Diane and Craig’s brother Ross.

“Craig had a wonderful spark about him and would make friends wherever he went, so this day is all about bringing these friends together to celebrate his life whilst raising money for a great cause close to the community of Hucknall’s heart.”

All money raised on the day will go to Hucknall’s Battle Batten Campaign for Freddie and Louie.

“I want to thank everyone who has helped organise the event and hope as many people as possible will come out for Craig on the day.”
