The moves comes after Ashfield District Council’s cabinet agreed to implement the scheme as another incentive to encourage more people to visit and shop in Kirkby, Sutton and Hucknall.

All car park users will need to obtain the free one-hour voucher from the ticket machine and display it, to ensure they avoid a fine. This will be clearly stated on all car park signage as a reminder.

Parking for up to two hours will remain at 60 pence, up to four hours will cost £1.50 and a whole day’s parking between 8am and 6pm, will cost £2.

Councillor Cheryl Butler, council leader, said: “This will provide a much needed boost for local traders and shops by encouraging people into Ashfield’s town centres.

“For people thinking about making a short trip to make a quick purchase, not having to pay for their parking will be an added incentive.

“Even better, as wanted, free parking is going to be in place in time for the busy Christmas shopping period which is great news both for traders and shoppers.”
