Great turn out for flooding open day

Hucknall Leisure Centre was the booked venue but demand exceeded expectations and another room had to be opened up to cope with the crowds.

“It was very well attended which shows the strength of feeling in the town,” said Coun Ian Morrison (Lab Hucknall North). “Something has got to be done about the situation.”

The event was held following a number of recent floods in the town which has left some residents homeless and demanding answers.

Coun Morrison added: “It was a good event which gave residents chance to air their views and also enable them access to information as well as products to help themselves.”

A number of agencies and representatives from local government attended.

This included Severn Trent, The Environment Agency, Ashfield district and Nottinghamshire county councillors.

“There is more work to do to apply more pressure on the agencies to provide a solution,” added Coun Morrison.

Thoresby Dale resident Bill Ward, who has been campaigning for years for improvedflood protection in the area, agreed it was a useful exercise.

“It was certainly worthwhile but whether anything will come from it - we will have to wait and see,” said Bill.

“The relevant parties were all in attendance and they listened to us but said the same things we always hear.

“It seems that until the findings of the investigations by the flood risk team are known they are not prepared to budge.”
