Geoffrey Turney, 57, of Abbots Drive, denied the traffic offence on May 5 last year, but failed to turn up for his trial on February 17, where he was convicted, fined and received three penalty points on his license.

He told the court he had been diagnosed with a ‘serious heart condition’, and that his wife and father had recently been taken into hospital.

Mr Turney said: “I was under a lot of stress and for me to attend on that day would have been a disaster.

“I want to give reasons why I feel I am not guilty.”

Magistrates turned down his application to re open the case.

Mr Turney was advised to bring evidence of his medical condition if he decided to appeal their decision at the crown court.
