Hucknall town centre will be closed to traffic on August bank holiday Saturday for pedestrianised ‘taster’ day

The upper part of High Street will be closed to traffic for the whole of Bank Holiday Saturday 23rd August.

This section, between Baker Street and Watnall Road, will eventually be permanently pedestrianised as part of the long-awaited £12m regeneration plan.

Tom Boylan, of Nottinghamshire County Council’s major projects team, told an open meeting of the I Love Hucknall group: “This is a good opportunity to show what this part of High Street will be like when it is free of traffic.”

Work on the new road is due to start in the spring or summer of 2015 and the whole scheme is scheduled to be completed by December 2016.

Traffic diversions will take place in the area between 26th July and 22nd August because of extensive roadworks.

I Love Hucknall are planning to take advantage of the ‘taster’ day to hold a High Street community event.

Market-type stalls are to be set up there and five applications have already been received from would-be occupants.

Other suggestions range from entertainment by a busker to a circus skills demonstration and a photography competition.

Jan Pauley, who has been described as the county council’s ‘ideas woman’, attended a meeting of the I Love Hucknall executive committee this week to discuss the arrangements.

The group’s next open meeting will be at the Sure Start Children’s Centre, Broomhill Road, Hucknall, on Wednesday 9th July at 6pm.
